Honor Flight #16 – “Sweet Sixteen”
On October 12th, 25 WWII Veterans (including our oldest vet ever - 102 years old), along with 22 guardians and 2 team leaders flew out of Tucson on our 16th official Southern Arizona Honor Flight. This was our last flight of 2014 - bringing this year’s total number of veterans to 130! [Since 2011, we have flown 471 WWII veterans from Tucson!] It is hard to believe that we have come so far in just 4 short years. Our thanks to a very generous Southern Arizona community, job well done!
We would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to the following groups who helped us get this flight off the ground:
Thunder Mountain Marine Corps League sponsored S. Holmes (USMC)
Sponsoring veterans from our waiting list on this flight:
Unit 15 Neighborhood Association sponsored J. Robison (USAAF)
Green Valley MOAA sponsored Lt. Col. W. Peel (USAAC)
Ironwood Ridge HS Students sponsored G. Carrillo (USMC)
Private donors sponsored G. McWane (USAAC) and B. Burns (USA)
We also would like to thank the following businesses and organizations who made donations to the general fund for this flight:*
Berg’s Heating & Air Conditioning
Keller Williams Southern Arizona
George Meluch, D.C.
Nova Vista Inc.
*If your donation is not listed above, it is being directed to an upcoming flight.
I would like to give a special thanks to Dee Brunner, Viki Matthews and everyone at the TAA for overall coordination with our group and for providing the send-off and welcome home crowds with parking validation. Our relationship with the American Airlines, DM Desert Lightning Team and Color Guard, the Patriot Guard Riders, the Ft Huachuca Military Intelligence Corps Band, and the Arizona Rangers make our send-offs and returns very special for everyone in attendance.
The generosity of the entire community has enabled us to send these vets on their well-deserved trip. It is a very big effort and takes and amazing amount of collaboration to bring business, organizations, clubs, schools and volunteers together to make it all happen. What a special group of people, and I am proud to be a part of this wonderful organization.
